Plug-in solar kits are getting popular. Cheap, self-install, plug them into a wall outlet, and watch your bills drop. Sounds great. But UK industry groups — including the Electrical Contractors’ Association, Electrical Safety First, the IET, NICEIC, and SELECT — just issued a joint warning about six specific safety risks.
Two-way power. Plug-in solar lets power flow both ways, which can compromise RCDs (the safety switches that shut off power when they detect a leak). One death in Australia has been linked to this failure mode.
Fire risk. Over half the UK’s housing stock is more than a century old, with wiring that wasn’t designed for extra load. Plug-in solar adds to localized overheating risk, especially if multiple units are used.
Poor quality hardware. Cheap kits are flooding the market with inconsistent quality. Some are sold with flattened cables designed to pass under doors — exactly the kind of thing a DIYer thinks is fine and an electrician immediately flags.
Grid safety. Network operators can’t monitor or manage power generated by plug-in units. That affects local capacity, stability, and how fast microinverters shut down during a power outage.
Insurance and liability. How will insurers handle damage from self-installed hardware on unsuitable wiring? The warning flags a lack of clarity for landlords, leaseholders, and insurers.
Poor installation. Extension leads, adapters, badly routed cables — the usual DIY suspects. Plus solar panels on balconies that could fall into the street.
“A poorly regulated bargain product may reduce bills in the short-term, but it can also transfer risk onto households,” the groups warn. If you’re going plug-in solar, at least get a licensed electrician to check your installation.
