Vitalik Buterin threw down a challenge to AI on June 22. He claimed he’d published several Ethereum documents under someone else’s name this decade. His bet? No AI could identify them by his writing style.
Thirteen days later, he checked in. Nobody found it. Not a single researcher. Not any advanced AI script.
Buterin dropped a hint on July 5: “I would encourage people to somewhat broaden their search. I’ve seen quite a few searches and AI scripts that fail to include categories of documents that really should be included.”
The hidden document matters. It could be a technical proposal for improving the Ethereum network, an analysis of cryptographic protocols, a mathematical study, or a scaling concept. Buterin estimates there are between 200 and 2,000 documents of similar scale online.
AI lost this round because of its own settings. The algorithms hit rigid filters. Standard templates only scanned official blogs and technical specs. They completely missed other layers of publication.
This isn’t just a parlor trick. It confirms why Buterin stays skeptical about AGI. Modern AI models still stumble on non-standard tasks. Human secrecy remains stronger than algorithms — at least for now.
