Desktop ‘RTX 4080M’ Built From Salvaged Laptop Silicon Underperforms But Sips Power

Someone slapped laptop GPU silicon onto a desktop card. The result? An “RTX 4080M” that loses to a cheaper AMD card — but draw’s only 100W under load.

A reviewer tested the Franken-card against an RX 9070 GRE, which costs slightly more. The 4080M lost. But it also consumed a fraction of the power — around 100W in games, compared to what a full desktop card would pull.

That’s the tradeoff. You’re getting laptop performance in a desktop form factor, built from salvaged AD104 silicon that didn’t make the cut for mobile. It’s not fast by 2026 standards, but it’s efficient.

Who is this for? Probably not gamers chasing frame rates. But for compact builds, low-power home servers, or anyone trying to squeeze desktop functionality out of a constrained power budget — it’s an interesting option.

100W in games is wild when you consider that a typical RTX 4080 desktop card can pull north of 320W. This thing runs cool enough that you could probably cool it passively in the right case.

The modding scene keeps finding new ways to recycle laptop chips. This is one of the weirder results.
