Zcash’s Ironwood network upgrade might not make its late July target. Shielded Labs has warned that exchanges, mining pools, and wallets simply may not have enough time to get ready.
The problem is timing. Two major transitions are hitting at once. Alongside Ironwood, the Zcash ecosystem is being asked to replace the aging zcashd node software with a new stack called Z3 — which includes Zebra for nodes, Zaino for blockchain data, and Zallet for wallets. None of it is production-ready yet.
“Zallet and Zaino were still under development and not ready for production use,” said Jason McGee, executive director of Shielded Labs. Feedback from infrastructure providers was mixed — some said they’d be ready by late July, others need more time.
Ironwood was proposed after researchers found an “infinity” bug in Orchard, Zcash’s private transaction pool. The flaw could’ve let someone create unlimited fake ZEC inside the pool without detection. No evidence it was exploited, but Orchard’s privacy features make that impossible to prove.
Ironwood would open a replacement pool and freeze the Orchard pool. Funds leaving Orchard would pass through an accounting checkpoint preventing more ZEC from exiting than originally entered — letting users verify the supply is legit.
The network’s official guidance says operators may need to modify their systems because some zcashd functions won’t have direct replacements.
No delay has been finalized. Zcash founder Zooko Wilcox said security reviews found no additional serious bugs so far, and developers are working to verify the new system before activation.
It’s a balancing act: restore confidence in Zcash’s shielded supply quickly, or give everyone enough time to deploy safely.
