HSBC Issues First Blockchain-Native Structured Product in Hong Kong

HSBC has issued its first digitally native structured product in Hong Kong, placing USD-denominated notes directly on a blockchain. The transaction, which used Marketnode as tokenization agent and digital paying agent, marks a milestone in the bank digital asset strategy.

The structured product was issued directly on a distributed ledger rather than being recorded on traditional settlement systems and then tokenized. This native issuance approach differs from most tokenization efforts, which typically involve creating digital representations of assets already recorded on traditional infrastructure.

HSBC has been an active participant in blockchain-based capital markets, having previously issued digital bonds and participated in various central bank digital currency pilots. The Hong Kong transaction represents the bank latest step in integrating blockchain technology into its core capital markets business.

Hong Kong has emerged as a leading jurisdiction for digital asset innovation, with regulators providing clear frameworks for tokenized securities and digital asset services. The city authorities have actively courted crypto and blockchain businesses as part of a broader strategy to establish Hong Kong as a regional digital asset hub.

The transaction also reflects the growing interest among traditional banks in using blockchain technology for capital markets activities. JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, and BlackRock have all launched tokenization initiatives, primarily focused on money market funds and fixed income products.

For HSBC, the digitally native structured product provides operational efficiencies through automated settlement and reduced reconciliation requirements. The bank has indicated it plans to expand its digital issuance capabilities to other products and jurisdictions.
