PayPal wants its stablecoin to live where the action is. PYUSD is getting native issuance on Polygon — a move that puts it squarely inside the DeFi ecosystem without requiring bridges or wrapped versions.
It’s also dropping into Polygon’s Open Money Stack, which is basically a toolkit for developers to plug stablecoin payments into their apps. That means PYUSD can flow through lending protocols, DEXs, and payment apps without extra friction.
PYUSD has had a decent run since launch, but it’s still dwarfed by USDT and USDC in terms of market cap. Native issuance on Ethereum was step one. Polygon is step two. If this helps PYUSD find real utility beyond just sitting on exchanges, it could carve out a meaningful slice of the market.
The play here is pretty straightforward. PayPal has 400+ million users globally. If even a fraction of those start using PYUSD in DeFi through familiar apps, it changes the game for stablecoin adoption. The key word is “if” — but PayPal’s been methodical about this rollout.
Polygon’s low fees and fast finality make it a natural fit for stablecoin transactions. Sending PYUSD on Polygon costs pennies. That’s the kind of user experience that actually competes with traditional payment rails.
