The big boy is back. After nearly nine years, Sony is breathing new life into its RX10 superzoom line. The RX10 V keeps the same 24-600mm equivalent f/2.4-4 Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 25x zoom lens from the last two models. That lens was already excellent. So what’s different?
Pretty much everything else. The new 20.1-megapixel sensor uses a stacked design. That means speed — up to 30fps continuous burst shooting with zero blackout. The RX10 IV topped out at 24fps, so this is a meaningful jump for anyone shooting action, sports, or wildlife. No frozen viewfinder. No guessing where your subject went.
Sony didn’t cut corners on the optics either. That Zeiss glass covers an insane zoom range without sacrificing quality. For photographers who need one camera to rule them all, this has always been the sweet spot.
There’s one catch. The RX10 IV launched at $1,700 back in 2017. The RX10 V? $2,299.99 when it ships in early August. That’s a steep climb, even accounting for inflation and the new sensor tech.
Is it worth it? Depends on your use case. If you’re a travel, wildlife, or event photographer who hates swapping lenses, this camera just became a lot more compelling. If you’re a casual shooter, that price tag might make you wince.
Either way, it’s good to see Sony hasn’t forgotten the superzoom crowd. The RX10 line had a loyal following, and this refresh gives them something real to work with.
