OpenAI is pulling the plug on ChatGPT Atlas — its AI-powered browser — less than a year after it launched.
Atlas was supposed to be OpenAI’s answer to Chrome: a browser that could do tasks for you automatically. Instead, it’s getting sunset on August 9th. The company confirmed the shutdown alongside a wave of ChatGPT Work announcements.
It’s been a rough few months for OpenAI’s side projects. They already killed the Sora video generation app and shelved plans for a ChatGPT “adult mode.” The company is trying to cut what they call “side quests” and play catch-up with Anthropic on productivity features.
OpenAI’s James Sun said the browser experiment wasn’t a total loss: “All these capabilities were built on what we learned from Atlas users who took a leap of faith on a new browser.” The ChatGPT desktop app and cloud browser features will incorporate those learnings.
