AscendEX Exchange Shuts Down, Users Left Waiting on Withdrawals

AscendEX is done. The crypto exchange announced on July 6 that it shut down operations effective July 1, citing regulatory, financial, and operational challenges.

The announcement came with no clear path for user payouts. That’s the part that stings most for anyone still holding funds on the platform.

AscendEX — formerly known as BitMax — launched in 2018 and grew into a mid-tier exchange with a focus on derivatives and staking products. It survived the 2022 contagion and the FTX collapse. But it couldn’t survive whatever was happening behind the scenes in 2026.

The exchange didn’t get into specifics. “Regulatory, financial, and operational challenges” covers a lot of ground. It could mean regulatory pressure in key markets, liquidity issues, or both.

For users, the situation is grim. There’s no guarantee that customer funds will be returned, and the company hasn’t offered a timeline or process for withdrawals. If you had assets on AscendEX, you’re in a waiting game with no clear end.

It’s another reminder that exchange risk isn’t going anywhere. Self-custody still matters.
