Dragonflies Dogfight Like Fighter Pilots, New Study Shows

Male dragonflies fight each other in mid-air. Not like they hunt — different moves entirely. A new study in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface found they use tactics that look a lot like human fighter pilots.

Simple rules. That’s what drives it.

When hunting, dragonflies approach prey from below. Silhouette against the sky, easier to track. But when they’re defending territory against other males? Total dogfight. Convoluted trajectories. Backgrounds of foliage and ground. They’re not trying to intercept — they’re competing for position.

The researchers used two synchronized high-speed cameras to record 102 male-on-male flight paths in 3D. They also recorded nine prey interceptions for comparison. The species they picked: Trithemis Aurora. Males are fiercely territorial and bright crimson. Easy to spot.

What they found: the dragonflies pull up to 6 Gs during combat. They glide at least a third of the time, even in intense fights — probably to save energy or track targets better. Sharp turns come from flapping, not gliding.

The parallel to fighter pilots is striking. Both try to get behind the opponent — chasing the tail. Both use spirals and vertical turns. The authors think it’s because both have forward-biased sensors: fighter jets have forward-facing radar, dragonflies have frontally biased vision.

One difference: fighter pilots use altitude as energy reserve. Dive to gain speed. Dragonflies don’t bother. They prefer sitting slightly below their opponent, trading energy advantage for a better visual angle.

The research could feed into smarter drone design. Vision-based navigation without heavy computation. If a dragonfly brain can do it with simple rules, maybe our drones can too.
