The first time Sean Hollister saw Beni on Instagram, he thought it was AI-generated. A two-legged dog robot that runs, jumps, and films you in 4K for $800? Surely not in 2026.
Then he tried it. And yes, it’s real.
Beni is from Shenzhen-based Mondo Robotics, a startup founded by DJI veterans. It’s a two-legged robot dog that hits nearly 18 mph, jumps 10 inches, climbs stairs, and lasts up to 1.5 hours on a charge. It records in super-stable 4K30 HDR — or 3K60, or 1080p100 — and edits as it goes.
You control it with joysticks in the app, a bundled wrist-mounted controller, or just set it to follow you from behind, the side, or orbit like a drone. Its obstacle avoidance cameras and UWB wrist tracker keep it close.
Sort of. In early testing, it clipped corners, smacked walls, and ran into Hollister’s foot while trying to keep up with a kick scooter. But walking through downtown Oakland? It did fine.
The durability is the real story. Hollister intentionally ran it into walls, off ledges, and down flights of stairs. Beni bounced back every time — scuffed, but working. The secret is in the legs: motors in the shoulders fling the lower legs down, and spring-filled cylindrical joints absorb the shock. When it falls, it rights itself by rotating those legs back under its body.
It’s also got personality. Pet its head and it’ll jump, shake, or coo at you while flashing colored lights from its Wall-E-like binocular eyes. The fact that it looks with its head before turning its body makes it feel alive.
Swappable battery. MicroSD slot. Hidden USB-C. Tripod threads hidden under its orange ears. Mondo even plans a 4G dongle and treat-tosser accessory.
Caveats apply — it’s a Kickstarter project from a relatively unknown startup. There’s always a risk it won’t ship. But after two hours with Beni, Hollister’s verdict: if there isn’t a fatal flaw by production, this is going on his Christmas list.
