Cars have gotten too big. That’s the bet a Lisbon startup called Amble is making with its new electric buggy, the Amble One.
It won’t impress anyone with speed. The 15 kW motor tops out at 40 mph. The 11 kWh battery gives you about 62 miles of range. No self-driving features whatsoever. But that’s the point.
Amble’s CEO Adrien Roose says most families have two cars: one for highway trips and one for school runs, grocery shopping, and neighborhood driving. The Amble One targets that second slot. It’s street-legal under Europe’s L7e quadricycle regulations, which means it has to weigh under 450 kg including the battery — a serious engineering constraint.
The design team includes alumni from Apple, Audi, and Cowboy. The look is neo-retro, open-air, no doors. Seats fold flat for surfboards. There’s a front cargo rack. Leather and cork accents. It looks like what would happen if a Moon buggy and a Mini Moke had a baby.
Amble is starting with fleet sales to hotels and resorts, but strong reservation demand — over 1,000 so far at $100 deposits — has pushed the company to accelerate plans for a US street-legal version. Target price is $25,000. Deliveries aimed for 2028.
Is this the G-Wagen of golf carts? Kind of. Roose says the Lunar Rover was the real inspiration. But if you squint, you can see it.
