Meta released Muse Image, the first AI image generation model from its Superintelligence Labs division. It’s live across Meta AI, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Facebook and Messenger are next.
Here’s the feature that’ll get attention: you can @mention another Instagram user in your prompt, and Muse Image pulls their likeness into the output. Meta says it uses public photos to build the visual. Users can control how their content gets reused through Instagram’s settings.
Muse replaces Meta’s Llama lineup. Alexandr Wang, who Meta hired to run Superintelligence Labs, describes it as “agentic.” It works with Muse Spark — Meta’s large language model — to reason through the prompt, search the web, and plan before generating. That’s a step beyond just typing a description and hoping for the best.
Other features: transform images with suggested prompts, design invitations and postcards, and redesign rooms based on photos from Facebook Marketplace. You can also draw directly on photos to make changes, then share to your feed or story. Muse Image powers 30 new AI effects coming to Instagram Stories in the US first.
Meta also teased Muse Video. Wang says it’s “competitive on prompt adherence, visual fidelity, temporal consistency.” No launch date yet.
The @mention feature raises obvious questions. Consent, likeness rights, what happens when someone’s image gets used in ways they didn’t expect. Meta’s leaning on existing settings for now, but this is the kind of feature that’ll get tested fast once it’s in wide use.
