Bentley is finally adding a fourth model to its lineup, and now we know what it’s called: the Torcal. The luxury automaker has been testing its first electric vehicle for a while now — spotted in the Arctic Circle late last year and more recently at the Nürburgring.
There was some confusion about the name. Trademark filings in Europe and the UK pointed to Torcal, but the absence of a US filing led some to suggest it might be called the Bentley Barnato, after the pre-war racing driver who won Le Mans three times in a Bentley.
Instead, Bentley stuck with its naming convention. Like the Bentayga, Bacalar, and Batur, the Torcal takes its name from a natural landmark — El Torcal de Antequera, a stunning limestone formation in Spain. The name also traces back to the Latin “torquere,” root of the word torque. That’s a hint: electric powertrains deliver tons of instant torque.
The full reveal is set for September 23 in London. Bentley CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser called it “the most considered car in our history.” Spy shots show a fastback silhouette with a large curved display inside, red leather, and black Alcantara. Some mechanical tactile controls too — thank you, Bentley, for not going full touchscreen.
