Almost a million people lost money on Donald Trump’s $TRUMP memecoin. Total losses: $3.8 billion.
That’s according to Nansen, a crypto analytics firm. The New York Times reported the analysis, which looks at publicly visible blockchain transactions. As of the end of June, 988,905 accounts were in the red. That’s roughly two out of every three buyers.
$TRUMP is trading at $1.69 as of Sunday. That’s down nearly 98% from its all-time high of $75.35.
The coin launched three days before Trump’s inauguration in 2025. Trump also co-founded World Liberty Financial with his sons — that coin, $WLFI, has tanked too.
Here’s the part that stings: Trump himself made $636 million from $TRUMP, according to a recent financial disclosure. That accounted for nearly half of the $1.4 billion he made from crypto last year. So basically, retail buyers funded the president’s windfall while holding the bag.
The SEC under Trump has said memecoins aren’t securities. It’s also dropped multiple lawsuits against crypto companies. A White House spokesperson told the NYT that Trump “proudly made the United States the crypto capital of the world.”
For the 988,905 accounts sitting on losses, that probably doesn’t help much.
