Claude Fable 5 is leaving subscription plans on July 7. That got people worried. But Anthropic says it’s temporary.
The company’s most powerful model will switch to usage-based billing next week. Pro, Max, and Team plans get Fable 5 for up to 50% of their weekly limits through July 7. After that? You’ll need usage credits.
The panic made sense on the surface. Fable 5 was only just restored after the US government lifted export controls. Losing it again felt like a bait and switch. But a Claude Code lead engineer clarified on X that the plan is to bring Fable back to subscriptions once they have enough capacity.
“While it will come off subscriptions after July 7th, we aim to restore Fable as a standard part of our subscriptions as soon as capacity allows,” the engineer wrote.
Anthropic admitted demand is “very high, and difficult to predict.” So they’re being cautious with subscription access rather than letting the model crater from overuse. Fable 5 is still fully available on the API and consumption-based Enterprise plans. Subscription users are just getting throttled until the infrastructure catches up.
Bottom line: if you’re on a Claude subscription and love Fable 5, you’ve got a few more days of included access. After that, expect to pay per-use until Anthropic scales up. Annoying? Sure. Permanent? Apparently not.
