US Home Battery Installations Hit an All-Time High in Early 2026

Americans installed a record 673 megawatts of home battery storage in the first quarter of 2026. That’s according to the US Energy Information Administration, and it’s being driven by two things: state incentives and rising electricity costs.

California and Hawaii led the pack. California offers better pricing for solar power exported to the grid after sunset if you’ve got a battery. Hawaii gives a flat $400 per kilowatt of battery storage you install. Texas and Arizona also saw big jumps.

This is the natural next step for states that already pushed rooftop solar hard. Batteries let you actually use that solar energy at night instead of sending it back to the grid for pennies. And with residential electricity costs up 7% year-over-year as of April, the math is getting harder to ignore.

There’s a twist, though. The federal solar tax credit — that 30% break homeowners relied on — is gone. The One Big Beautiful Bill killed it. Solar panel installations have slowed as a result. But batteries are still booming.

Virtual power plants are part of the story. Companies like Base Power offer discounted batteries and electricity rates in exchange for managing your battery as part of a network. Home battery capacity in VPPs jumped 153% in 2025. A July 2025 demo showed 100,000 home batteries can deliver more power than a large gas peaker plant.

And yes, AI data centers are the elephant in the room. Sunrun, Renew Home, and Tesla just announced they’re combining hundreds of thousands of home batteries into what they claim will be the largest distributed power plant in the country — capable of delivering over 16 GW to data centers and utilities.

The grid is changing. And it’s happening one home battery at a time.
