Kali Linux 2026.2 is out, and it’s a solid update for anyone who lives in the penetration testing distro. The second release of the year adds nine new tools, updates NetHunter for Android, and dramatically cuts boot times for VM users.
The new tools include arsenal-ng (a Go-based cheat sheet library with 200+ entries), legba for credential bruteforcing, oletools for analyzing Office documents, and shell-gpt — an AI-powered command-line productivity tool. There’s also tailscale for secure connectivity and tookie-osint for finding social media accounts.
On the performance side, the Kali team stripped graphics firmware from pre-built VM images. The result: initrd is down to 60 MB and boot time is roughly three times faster on QEMU. Baremetal users won’t notice a change — they still get the full 200 MB initrd with all firmware included.
NetHunter got a meaningful refresh too. The app launches faster, custom commands and chroot manager bugs are fixed, and there’s a new EvilTwin tab with a password verification captive portal. Magisk standalone kernel flashing support is now available, and there are new kernels with Wi-Fi injection support for more phone models.
The distro ships with GNOME 50 and KDE Plasma 6.6. The kernel is bumped to 6.19, with 7.0 available in the experimental repo.
If you’re running Kali in a VM, this upgrade alone is worth it for the boot time improvement.
