WhatsApp is rolling out usernames, and you can start reserving yours this week. The feature, launching “later this year,” will let you add and chat with contacts without ever sharing your phone number.
Reservations are open now through Settings > Account > Username on the latest app version. The reason is simple: with three billion users, your preferred handle might already be gone if you wait. The rollout will happen gradually over the coming months, and you’ll get an in-app notification when it’s available where you live.
Once it launches, your phone number stays hidden from new contacts and businesses. There’s no public directory of usernames, and no algorithm suggesting people to follow. Someone needs to know your exact handle to reach you.
For creators and businesses, you can claim the same username you use on Instagram or Facebook. It’s a small feature, but on a platform this big, it could make a real difference for privacy.
