WhatsApp has started letting users reserve usernames, finally giving people a way to message without handing out their phone number. Rollout begins this week, though the feature won’t go fully live for a few months.
With over three billion users, name collisions were inevitable. That’s why Meta is opening reservations early — go to Settings > Account > Username after updating the app. Once active, your username replaces your phone number for anyone not in your contacts.
There’s also an optional username key. Think of it as a password people need before they can message you. No directory to browse, no people suggestions. Someone needs to know your exact username to reach you.
You can change or delete your username anytime, but doing so releases it back into the pool for someone else to grab. Meta also reserved some usernames for governments, public figures, and businesses.
Signal has had this feature since February 2024. WhatsApp’s catching up, but it’s a welcome addition for the privacy-conscious. And let’s be honest — with 3 billion users, it’s about time.
