Vitalik Buterin Explains How Obfuscation Could Fix Private Onchain Voting

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin just dropped a technical essay on one of crypto’s hardest problems: how to vote onchain without anyone seeing how you cast your ballot. His answer hinges on something called indistinguishability obfuscation, or iO.

Here’s the idea. iO takes regular software and turns it into a black box—one that works perfectly but reveals none of its internals. You feed it encrypted votes, it spits out a final tally. Nobody, not even the people running the program, can see individual ballots or peek at intermediate data.

This matters because most privacy-preserving voting schemes today rely on threshold committees—groups of operators who collectively hold decryption keys. Hand those keys to the wrong people and the whole system falls apart. iO would remove that single point of failure entirely.

But there’s a catch, and it’s a big one. Buterin notes that the most secure iO constructions require “galactic” amounts of computation. The faster approaches lean on assumptions nobody’s fully stress-tested yet. So don’t expect this in your favorite DAO next week.

This isn’t a new interest for Buterin. He flagged iO’s voting potential in his 2024 Ethereum roadmap and expanded on it in April with a more immediate privacy push focused on wallet-level tools. He also directed $45 million from his personal ether holdings toward privacy infrastructure back in January.

The bottom line: the cryptography path exists. The engineering timeline? Measured in years, not months.
