NASA’s X-59 Flies Supersonic Without the Sonic Boom

NASA just completed the first supersonic flight of its experimental X-59, an aircraft designed to solve a problem that has kept airliners from flying faster than sound since 1973. No boom. Just a thump.

The Lockheed Martin X-59 Quesst (Quiet SuperSonic Technology) took off in late 2025 and recently crossed the barrier on June 5, 2026 near Edwards Air Force Base in California. The aircraft replaces the traditional double-bang sonic boom with a noise NASA compares to a car door closing about 20 feet away.

That distinction matters enormously. The FAA banned overland supersonic flight after public outrage in the 1960s, when the US military tested supersonic flights over Oklahoma City, Chicago, and St. Louis. Hundreds of thousands of complaints followed. The rule stayed for five decades.

Now Congress is actually advancing legislation to lift that ban. And NASA plans to take the X-59 on a national tour, flying over different communities to gauge whether regular people accept the quieter thumps or still find them annoying.

The X-59 has quirks. It has no forward window. Pilots use an external vision system. The airframe uses parts from other military aircraft, earning it the nickname frankenjet. NASA test pilot Jim Less says most X-planes are rough prototypes, but this one has to be robust enough to fly across the country and gather community feedback.

Financial viability remains the next hurdle. Even if the public accepts supersonic overland flights, airlines need to figure out whether expensive tickets can offset massive fuel consumption costs.

But for now, the test flight program is succeeding. And the regulatory pathway is finally opening up.
