The idea is straightforward: if AI can find software flaws faster than humans, attackers might use it to rip holes in DeFi protocols before anyone notices. But the reality is more nuanced than the panic suggests.
Claude Mythos is Anthropic’s most advanced AI system built specifically for cybersecurity. Unlike general-purpose chatbots, it’s designed for complex security tasks — vulnerability research, exploit analysis, layered reasoning about attack paths. Anthropic didn’t release it widely. Access was restricted, and one model in the lineup (Claude Fable 5) was suspended after a US government directive.
Here’s the thing though: the same tools available to attackers are available to defenders. Security teams can use AI to review code faster, flag suspicious patterns, and shorten the time it takes to patch vulnerabilities. In some controlled competitions, AI systems have found bugs in minutes that would take human researchers hours or days.
DeFi is a juicy target regardless of AI. Billions have been lost to flash-loan attacks, bridge exploits, and smart contract bugs. The code is often public, the money is on the chain, and many protocols are new enough that they haven’t been battle-tested. AI doesn’t change the fundamental attack surface — it just speeds up the process of finding weak spots.
The honest answer? AI is a force multiplier for both sides. It makes skilled attackers faster and gives defenders better tools. The protocols that invest in continuous security review — AI-assisted or not — will be fine. The ones that deployed unaudited code and hoped for the best were always going to get hit.
