BNY Lets Institutional Clients Mint and Redeem USDC Directly

BNY Mellon just made it easier for big-money clients to hop between dollars and USDC without leaving its custody platform.

The bank expanded its Digital Asset Custody platform to support minting, redemption, storage, and transfer of Circle’s USD Coin. It’s the first stablecoin on the platform, with more planned. Clients can convert US dollars to USDC — and back — all within BNY’s system.

This builds on BNY’s existing relationship with Circle. The bank already serves as primary custodian of the assets backing USDC reserves. Now it’s extending that role to client-facing stablecoin services.

The broader trend here is hard to miss. JPMorgan filed for a tokenized money market fund in May designed for stablecoin reserves. State Street launched a government money market fund for issuers. Bank of America and Fidelity are building their own stablecoin strategies.

With the stablecoin market sitting around $313 billion and USDC alone at $73.8 billion in circulation, traditional finance isn’t just watching anymore — it’s building infrastructure. BNY oversees $59.3 trillion in assets under custody. When they take stablecoin seriously, it signals the space has fully entered the institutional mainstream.
