People in several European countries are about to lose access to Studio Canal movies they bought on the PlayStation Store, thanks to an expiring licensing deal. On September 1, affected titles will be yanked from video libraries. No refunds.
Sony posted notices on regional PlayStation Store pages in the UK, France, Italy, and Spain, warning customers that hundreds of titles will disappear. If you bought any of them, they’ll be removed from your library on that date.
There’s a silver lining — it’s still months away, leaving room for Sony and Studio Canal to work out a new deal. That’s what happened with Discovery shows a few years back. PlayStation originally planned to pull them but reversed course after a new agreement.
It’s a familiar frustration. You buy a game, a movie, a book — but you’re really just buying a license that can be revoked. When the license expires or servers shut down, your purchased content can vanish overnight. Physical copies don’t have this problem.
