Someone poking around inside Claude Code v2.1.190 found new text strings suggesting Anthropic is getting ready to reintroduce Fable 5, its controversial Mythos-class model. The catch: it looks like it’ll be baked into weekly subscription plans rather than sold as a separate add-on.
The key phrase buried in the binary reads: “You’ve used your Fable 5 usage for this week.” Another removed line previously described the model as “purchased separately from your plan.” That line is gone now. Decrypt was able to verify the strings are genuine by downloading the macOS package directly from npm and inspecting it.
This matters because of how the whole saga started. Fable 5 launched in limited form for subscribers, then Anthropic planned to move it to usage credits sold a la carte. The Trump administration blocked that, issuing an emergency export control directive days after the model appeared, citing jailbreak concerns. Anthropic pushed back but ultimately pulled the model on June 12.
Since then, the political temperature seems to have dropped. Anthropic swapped Dario Amodei out for co-founder Tom Brown as its point person with the White House, and the administration reportedly warmed to the change. Trump himself said last week he no longer views Anthropic as a national security threat. Negotiations are now focused on building a shared framework for deciding when a jailbreak vulnerability actually constitutes a national threat.
The model’s status page still shows the June 13 suspension as active. No restoration date has been announced. But between the code changes and the political progress, the pieces seem to be quietly falling into place.
Amazon Bedrock still lists Claude Fable 5 in its model catalog, a.nd some observers think this could all happen sooner rather than later. Anthropic, for its part, isn’t saying anything publicly yet.
