Android 17 Adds Foldable Gaming Mode with Virtual Controller

Android 17 is getting a dedicated gaming mode for foldables that puts a virtual gamepad on half your screen. Google’s Mishaal Rahman showcased the feature on Reddit, confirming it works with any game that supports physical controllers.

The virtual controller emulates physical button presses at a system level. You get a D-pad, dual analog sticks, A/B/X/Y buttons, L1/L2/L3 and R1/R2/R3 triggers, and a start button. You can configure the layout — keep joysticks inline or staggered, scale button size, and toggle haptics.

It’s simple to activate: just unfold your device before or after launching a compatible game. Connect a physical controller and the virtual gamepad turns off automatically. You can also hide it entirely if you want the full screen back.

Google says the feature launches in the coming months. It’s a practical addition for foldable owners who want better gaming controls without carrying a Bluetooth controller everywhere.
