Trump cancels signing of housing bill with CBDC ban

President Trump abruptly cancelled the signing ceremony for a housing bill that would have banned the Federal Reserve from issuing a central bank digital currency until 2030.

He announced the decision Wednesday morning on Truth Social, saying he won’t sign the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act until Congress passes the SAVE America Act — a controversial voting bill that would require proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration.

The housing legislation, which passed both the House and Senate, included a provision barring the Fed from creating a CBDC or any “substantially similar” digital asset through the end of 2030. Notably, the bill carved out an exception for stablecoins — specifically dollar-denominated ones that are open, permissionless, and private.

Many observers had expected Trump to sign the bill without issue. However, he signaled back in March that he would “not sign other bills” until the SAVE America Act moved forward, using housing affordability as leverage to push his voting legislation priorities.

This is a developing story.
