GTA VI costs $80 — and the physical version is just a box with a download code

Get ready for sticker shock. As preorders for Grand Theft Auto VI kicked off this week, Rockstar confirmed the game will launch at $80. That’s $10 more than the $70 that gamers already grumbled about paying for AAA releases.

And if you’re hoping to grab the physical version? Don’t expect a disc. Retail copies are just a box with a download code inside. So you’re paying $80 for what’s essentially a digital download in physical packaging. At least preloading starts November 12, a week before the November 19 launch date.

Here’s Rockstar’s logic: GTA VI has a scope and budget that most studios can’t touch. The company argues the higher price reflects the enormous investment in fidelity, scale, and production quality. They’re not wrong — this is probably the most expensive game ever made. Plus, GTA VI isn’t just a single-player release. It’s expected to get a full multiplayer service with in-game purchases and subscriptions, meaning the initial sale is just the beginning of the revenue stream.

That said, don’t expect all AAA games to start charging $80. Other big releases will likely stick with $70 for now. The industry has been experimenting with different price tiers — AA games at $50, blockbusters at $70. Rockstar can charge $80 because millions of people will buy it regardless.

The PC version doesn’t have a release date yet, so if you’re holding out for that, you’ll be waiting a while longer. In the meantime, your wallet has fair warning.
