According to BeInCrypto, the development team behind BounceBit has confirmed it will permanently discontinue its native Layer 1 blockchain infrastructure. This decisive move follows a significant security incident in which an unauthorized actor successfully moved approximately 286.5 million BB tokens from nine distinct mainnet accounts.
The project is currently transitioning to reissue the cryptocurrency as a BEP-20 standard asset hosted on BNB Chain, effectively replacing its standalone protocol with a tokenized version of itself. Despite the substantial loss of assets, the team emphasized that their core security infrastructure remained intact throughout the event. They stated explicitly that no private keys were compromised and there was unauthorized access to user wallets or physical hardware devices.
The root cause for these massive transfers is attributed to protocol-level authorization flaws rather than a traditional breach. Consequently, while BounceBit will cease operations as an independent blockchain network, its community members can expect the token to continue circulating within the broader ecosystem via the new BEP-20 format on Binance Smart Chain.
The decision reflects the team’s commitment to maintaining operational continuity for their stakeholders by adapting to the technical reality of the exploit. By migrating to a well-established chain like BNB, they aim to preserve utility and accessibility while acknowledging that the original Layer 1 architecture can no longer be safely utilized following this specific type of authorization-based drain.
