Global Crypto Market Cap Surges to $3.16 Trillion as Bitcoin ETFs See Record Inflows and Regulatory Shift Occurs

According to Decrypt, the global cryptocurrency market experienced a significant rally on January 2nd, with the total market capitalization reaching an impressive $3.16 trillion. This represents a gain of approximately 1.5% for major assets trading at higher prices throughout the session.

BTC led the charge among top-tier coins, rising by roughly 2% to trade near $93,000. Ethereum (ETH) followed with a gain of about 1%, settling around $3,175 per coin. Meanwhile, Binance Coin (BNB) increased by nearly 2.5% at approximately $906, and Solana gained roughly 1% to trade near the $135 mark.

The momentum was particularly strong within specific sectors of the market. Top movers included Virtuals, which saw a massive jump of around 24%, followed by Render with gains nearing 17%. Other notable performers in this group were Bitt, which rose about 11%, and Fetch.ai, also gaining approximately 11% during the trading period.

Institutional interest remained a key driver of these movements. The Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $471 million in net inflows on their first day of operation within the year 2026. This figure stands as the highest single-day total since November 11th, highlighting renewed confidence from investors.

In regulatory news, a significant transition occurred at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Commissioner Caroline Crenshaw officially departed the agency on January 2nd. Her exit leaves behind an all-Republican commission structure as she concludes her tenure with the federal body overseeing securities regulations.
