Sablier Labs, the development company behind the Sablier token streaming protocol, has entered maintenance mode and halted active development. The protocol smart contracts, used by over 345,000 Ethereum addresses for real-time token distribution, will continue to function onchain without changes.
The decision to step back from active development reflects the challenging environment for DeFi projects that have not achieved sustainable revenue or found product-market fit for their tokenomics. Sablier had raised venture capital funding but faced the same headwinds affecting many projects in the current market cycle.
Sablier protocol enables users to stream tokens continuously rather than transferring them in lump sums, a mechanism commonly used for payroll, vesting schedules, and grant distributions. The protocol has been integrated by numerous DAOs and projects for distributing tokens to contributors over time.
While the smart contracts remain operational and accessible to users, the lack of ongoing development means no new features, upgrades, or security enhancements will be added unless the project is revived. Users can continue to withdraw streamed tokens and create new streams using the existing interface.
Sablier Labs decision is part of a broader trend of consolidation in the DeFi space, where many projects launched during the 2021-2022 bull market have struggled to maintain development teams and funding through the extended bear market.
The Sablier token SAB has not been immune to the broader market downturn, trading well below its all-time highs.
