The Linux Foundation has launched the x402 Foundation, an open industry body that will oversee the development of the x402 payment protocol. The standard is designed to allow AI agents, applications, and APIs to pay for digital services over HTTP without separate checkout or billing systems.
Ripple has joined the foundation as a premier member, integrating its XRP token and RLUSD stablecoin into the initiative. The foundation includes 40 member organizations spanning cloud providers, payment companies, and financial services firms.
The protocol embeds payment capabilities directly into web interactions, enabling machine-to-machine commerce where AI agents can autonomously pay for access to data, compute resources, or API calls. This represents a significant step toward building the infrastructure for an autonomous AI agent economy.
Cloudflare has already integrated the x402 protocol into its Monetization Gateway, allowing website operators to charge for access to content, datasets, and APIs with payments settling in stablecoins. The integration allows AI agents to access premium content without requiring human intervention for each transaction.
The protocol supports multiple payment types, from traditional cards to stablecoins, making it flexible enough to accommodate different use cases. The open governance structure ensures that no single company controls the standard.
The development of agent-to-agent payment infrastructure is seen as essential for the evolution of autonomous AI systems that need to transact with each other to complete complex tasks.
