BlackRock Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Join DTCC Pilot for Tokenized Stocks

The Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation (DTCC) is working with nearly 40 financial firms, including BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, and JPMorgan, in a pilot program to test tokenized stocks and US Treasury securities. The initiative represents a major step toward bringing traditional financial assets onto blockchain infrastructure.

The pilot aims to explore how distributed ledger technology can improve the efficiency of securities settlement and clearance. Tokenized securities would exist as digital representations of traditional assets on a blockchain, potentially enabling faster settlement, reduced counterparty risk, and increased transparency.

DTCC, which serves as the central securities depository for the US market, processes the vast majority of securities transactions in the country. Bringing blockchain technology into its operations could fundamentally reshape how US capital markets function.

“This is about modernizing the infrastructure that underpins the US capital markets,” a DTCC representative said. The pilot will test how tokenized versions of stocks and Treasuries can be issued, traded, and settled using blockchain technology while maintaining compliance with existing regulations.

The involvement of the largest asset managers and banks in the world signals growing institutional interest in tokenization. BlackRock alone manages over $10 trillion in assets, and its participation suggests the firm sees blockchain-based securities as a significant future component of capital markets.

Tokenization has been one of the fastest-growing segments of the crypto industry, with the market for tokenized real-world assets expanding from virtually nothing a few years ago to billions of dollars today. The DTCC pilot could accelerate this trend by providing the infrastructure for large-scale institutional adoption.

Industry observers note that the pilot is still experimental and faces significant regulatory and operational hurdles. However, the participation of major Wall Street institutions suggests that tokenization is moving from theoretical discussion toward practical implementation.
