Federal authorities have arrested a 21-year-old Florida man accused of using malware hidden inside video games to steal approximately $220,000 in cryptocurrency from victims. The suspect, identified as Zyaire Wilkins, allegedly procured malicious software that infected over 8,000 devices and compromised roughly 80 cryptocurrency wallets, according to the FBI.
The malware was distributed through video game files, a technique that allowed it to spread widely among gaming communities. Once installed on a victims device, the software could capture wallet credentials and private keys, enabling the attacker to drain funds from cryptocurrency holdings.
The case highlights the growing sophistication of crypto-focused cybercrime and the creative methods attackers use to distribute malware. By embedding malicious code in seemingly legitimate game files, the suspect was able to reach a large number of potential victims without raising immediate suspicion.
