Bitcoin Whale Moves 383 Million in BTC After 8 Years of Dormancy

A long-dormant Bitcoin whale has moved 5,908 BTC worth approximately $383 million to a new address after more than eight years of inactivity. The wallet, which had held the coins since 2017, transferred its entire balance on Wednesday, according to on-chain data from Lookonchain citing Arkham Intelligence.

The movement of such a large amount of bitcoin from an old wallet drew immediate attention from the crypto community. The wallet was created during the 2017 bull market and had remained untouched through multiple market cycles, accumulating significant unrealized gains at current prices.

The funds were transferred to a new address rather than to an exchange, suggesting the owner may be reorganizing their holdings rather than preparing to sell. Transactions from old wallets are often watched closely by traders as potential indicators of upcoming selling pressure, though transfers to new addresses do not necessarily signal an intent to sell.

Large movements of long-held Bitcoin have become more common in recent months as the cryptocurrency trades significantly below its all-time highs. Some long-term holders may be taking advantage of tax-loss harvesting opportunities, while others may simply be consolidating their holdings into more secure storage arrangements.

The transaction comes amid broader signs that the great distribution phase may be ending. Galaxy Digital Alex Thorn noted that veteran whales have halted a two-year selling spree, with old wallet activity dropping by 50 percent in 2026, suggesting that selling pressure from long-term holders is subsiding.
