Someone Used a 19th-Century Stirling Engine to Cool an AMD Threadripper — and It Actually Works

A Windows guru just did something absurdly cool. They strapped a $40 Stirling engine — yes, the kind that runs on temperature differentials, invented in 1816 — to an AMD Threadripper 3970X system for auxiliary cooling.

And it works. The waste heat from the Threadripper actually spins the engine’s flywheel.

The setup uses the CPU’s waste heat to drive the Stirling engine, which then provides additional airflow. It’s not replacing your Noctua or AIO liquid cooler — think of it as supplemental. But the fact that it runs at all off CPU waste heat is pretty wild.

The Threadripper 3970X is a 32-core, 64-thread monster. It puts out serious heat under load. The Stirling engine sits on top of that heat source and uses the temperature difference between the hot CPU area and the ambient air to drive its piston. More heat = faster spin.

Is it practical? No. Absolutely not. A $40 novelty engine isn’t going to replace proper cooling on a high-end workstation. But as a proof of concept and a conversation piece, it’s fantastic. The builder clearly knew what they were doing — the integration looks clean, with custom mounting and proper thermal interface material.

Sometimes tech projects don’t need to be practical. They just need to be cool. This one qualifies.
