Amazon’s Fire HD 10 just got a quiet upgrade. The 2023 model’s 32GB version now ships with 4GB of RAM instead of 3GB. No announcement. No fanfare. Just a spec bump and a $15 price increase from $139.99 to $154.99.
The rest stays the same. Same 10.1-inch 1920×1200 display. Same 2GHz eight-core processor. Same 13-hour battery. Same microSD slot for expandable storage.
If you want the 64GB version, that still comes with 3GB of RAM and costs more. Only the 32GB model got the RAM upgrade.
Why the change? Amazon hasn’t said. But there’s a RAM shortage going on — a “RAMageddon” driven by AI data center construction gobbling up memory chips. Valve’s Steam Machines are dealing with the same issue, shipping single 16GB sticks instead of the planned pair of 8GB sticks.
AFTVnews suggests Amazon might be having trouble sourcing the original components. Either way, more RAM at a slight premium is better than no refresh at all.
The original 3GB model is still available at $139.99 if you can find it in stock. The 4GB upgrade is only sold with lock screen ads, though you can pay a one-time fee to remove them later.
For a budget tablet, 4GB of RAM is a solid improvement. Makes a real difference in multitasking and tab-heavy browsing. Not bad for a three-year-old design.
