The US Treasury’s OFAC just added 134 cryptocurrency wallet addresses tied to ISIS-K to its sanctions list. Tether froze 131 of them — all on Tron. The remaining three were on Monero.
Chainalysis, the blockchain forensics firm tracking this, says those 131 Tron addresses received over $1.4 million in crypto donations since 2023. They sent out over $880,000.
ISIS-K has been soliciting crypto donations through websites and messaging platforms for years. The sanctioned addresses show significant exposure to mainstream services and Syria-based exchanges.
This is the second round of ISIS-related crypto sanctions in just over a week. On June 22, OFAC sanctioned three individuals and six entities across Europe, the Middle East, and West Africa — including Syria-based MSB Bitcoin Xchange and Turkish MSB Spider.
Blockchain analytics are playing a bigger role here. TRM Labs noted earlier this year that onchain evidence helped secure terrorism financing convictions in Indonesia. Courts there ruled crypto evidence — wallet addresses, transaction histories, onchain flows — as admissible and even central to prosecutions.
The takeaway: crypto isn’t anonymous, and sanctions enforcement is getting faster. Tether froze these wallets almost immediately after the OFAC designation dropped.
