Elon Musk says it’s “utterly false.” The Wall Street Journal reported that SpaceX showed investors a handset-like AI phone prototype before its record-breaking IPO in June. The device was reportedly slimmer than an iPhone, running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip with its own AI operating system powered by xAI.
But Musk isn’t having it. He called the report false on X. That said, he’s never fully ruled out making a phone. Last year he said “the idea of making a phone makes me want to die” — but added “if we have to make a phone, we will.” In February, he said SpaceX is “not developing a phone” after Reuters reported otherwise.
The context matters. SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell told investors the company is considering launching a mobile service in the US using Starlink. Some analysts think SpaceX could even buy T-Mobile. Starlink is currently SpaceX’s only profitable business.
A phone from SpaceX would make sense as a Starlink-connected device. But Musk keeps denying it. For now, it’s not happening — no matter what the WSJ says.
