Microsoft is working on a way to turn your physical Xbox games into digital copies. Sources say they have been quietly testing a disc-to-digital feature internally.
References to enable Disc2Digital appeared in the Xbox PC app code back in May. Employees are now testing it.
Here’s how it works: insert a compatible disc — Xbox One or Xbox Series X only, no 360 or original Xbox — and you get a digital entitlement tied to that specific disc. Swap discs with a friend and the entitlement moves with it. Lose the disc, you lose access.
If the game is on Xbox Cloud Gaming and you have Game Pass, you can stream it. Play Anywhere titles work on PC and handhelds too.
It makes sense. Sony is reportedly ending physical disc production. Microsoft’s next console, codenamed Project Helix, may not ship with a disc drive. A disc-to-digital feature would be essential for existing owners.
Some Xbox One discs might not work depending on when and how they were manufactured. Microsoft warned testers about that.
