Say goodbye to game discs. Sony announced that starting January 2028, new PlayStation games won’t get physical releases. Digital-only from then on.
Games released before that date will still be available on disc. But new titles? PlayStation Store or nothing.
Sony’s reasoning: “The general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs.” Hard to argue with the numbers. The PS5 Pro already shipped without a disc drive. The writing’s been on the wall.
This follows the GTA VI physical edition drama — which will ship as a download code in a box. Fans weren’t happy. The backlash was loud. Didn’t matter.
Digital-only means no resale, harder game sharing, and total dependence on Sony’s servers and your account staying active. If you buy a game in 2030 and Sony shuts down the PS5 store in 2035? Hope you downloaded it.
Collectors, physical game enthusiasts, and anyone who actually wants to own their games just lost a round.
