Carl Rinsch, the director behind “47 Ronin,” has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for diverting $11 million meant for a Netflix TV production. He spent the money on stock options, cryptocurrency, and luxury purchases including Rolls-Royces.
It’s a spectacular fall for a filmmaker who once had Hollywood’s attention. Rinsch was supposed to be producing a Netflix series. Instead, he siphoned off production funds for personal speculation and a lavish lifestyle.
The case highlights a pattern of crypto-related financial crime that’s become familiar in recent years. From embezzled funds to speculative bets, the playbook is depressingly consistent. Rinsch reportedly lost much of the money on failed stock options trades.
Federal prosecutors didn’t specify exactly how much went into crypto versus other purchases. But the mix of stolen funds, risky trading, and luxury spending paints a clear picture of someone who thought they could multiply stolen money fast enough to cover their tracks.
They couldn’t. Rinsch now faces three years in federal prison and the end of a career that once looked promising.
