A self-exiled Chinese billionaire has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for orchestrating a fraud conspiracy that pulled in over $1 billion through cryptocurrency schemes. The defendant, identified as Guo, was originally arrested in 2023.
The sentence is one of the longest handed down in a crypto-related fraud case. Prosecutors described a sprawling operation that used digital assets to bilk investors across multiple jurisdictions. The scale of the fraud, exceeding a billion dollars, placed it among the largest crypto crime cases ever prosecuted.
Guo had fled China and continued operating from abroad, making the case as much about international enforcement cooperation as about the fraud itself. Authorities eventually caught up with him, leading to the 2023 arrest and now this substantial prison term.
Thirty years sends a signal. Crypto fraud at this scale does not end with a slap on the wrist. Whether it deters the next big scheme is a different question entirely.
