Quantum computing startup QuEra has laid out an ambitious roadmap, and it’s a fascinating study in saying a lot while revealing very little.
Here’s what we know: Amazon will host a useful quantum computer from QuEra as early as 2028. The system promises over 10,000 individual qubits with error rates low enough to support hundreds of error-corrected logical qubits. That would be a genuine breakthrough.
Here’s the gap: QuEra’s current hardware sits at 260 qubits that are relatively error-prone. And the company says there will be no new hardware releases between now and that 2028 machine. They’re promising an even more powerful system just one year later, in 2029.
QuEra’s Yuval Borger told Ars Technica that the company “made a strategic decision not to sell NISQ systems anymore.” Their previous two systems had around 250 hardware qubits — enough to test error correction codes, but not enough for practical logical qubit applications.
So the company is essentially telling customers: don’t buy what we have now, wait a few years for something dramatically better. That’s either confidence in their R&D timeline or a significant gamble with investor money.
The quantum computing space is full of bold claims. What makes QuEra notable is that Amazon — a company not known for gambling on unproven tech — is willing to host their system. Whether the timeline holds is another matter entirely.
