If you bought movies on the PlayStation Store in the UK, you might want to check your library. Sony has told customers they will lose access to 551 StudioCanal titles starting September 1. We are talking Paddington, Terminator 2, Pan’s Labyrinth, Rambo 3 — gone. Even though you paid for them.
The reason? Licensing agreements. Sony’s legal notice says the removal is “due to our content licensing agreements” with StudioCanal. It does not matter that you handed over money expecting to keep these films. When the license expires, so does your access.
This is not the first time. In 2023, Sony told customers it would have to pull 1,318 seasons of Discovery shows from their libraries. Enough people got angry that Sony eventually negotiated new licensing terms and kept the content available. The same thing could happen here — a deal could get struck before September. But the pattern is the real problem.
Every time a digital store pulls purchased content, it highlights the same uncomfortable truth: you do not own what you buy digitally. You are licensing access, and that access can be revoked. There is no shelf to put it on, no disk to hold. When the agreement between the platform and the content owner falls apart, you are left with nothing.
For now, UK PlayStation users have about two months to watch whatever StudioCanal content they bought. After that, it disappears regardless of what they paid.
