OpenAI’s building hardware for Codex — but it’s not the Jony Ive mystery device you might’ve been expecting.
A teaser posted to X shows a square device with buttons, dials, and switches. The caption: “Your favorite Codex shortcuts are getting an upgrade.” It drops July 15th, in partnership with Work Louder, a company that makes mechanical keyboards and macro pads.
The device looks a lot like Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2 macro pad, with mechanical switches, a joystick, and touch sensors. The idea is simple: map your most-used Codex shortcuts to physical buttons. Figma did something similar with Work Louder, releasing a macro pad with preconfigured shortcuts for designers.
This isn’t OpenAI’s first hardware rodeo — and it won’t be their last. But this one’s practical: a dedicated input device for developers who live in Codex all day.
