Sony just dropped its strongest hint yet about the next PlayStation — and it’s heading beyond your TV.
In a recent investor Q&A, Sony’s gaming division responded to a question about winning back users who switched to gaming PCs during COVID. The answer was telling: “We aim to deliver value that is unique to PlayStation. This includes not only technological advancements but an expansion of usage styles, enabling a seamless experience that can be enjoyed naturally beyond the living room.”
Remote Play and the PlayStation Portal already let you play on the go, but Bloomberg reported last year that Sony is developing a dedicated handheld. Add the Power Saver mode added to some PS5 games and the picture becomes clearer.
There’s a pricing reality check, too. Sony was unequivocal: “We do not intend to sell hardware at significant losses.” Given the PS5 Pro sits at $900 and PS5 prices have already gone up this year, expect a steep price tag for next-gen hardware.
Bottom line: the next PlayStation won’t just be a faster box under your TV. Sony’s betting on portability — and they’re going to charge accordingly.
