Solar power attracts strong opinions. Too strong, honestly. The conversation is full of myths on both sides — people who think solar will save them thousands overnight, and others who insist it’s a complete waste of money. Neither extreme is helpful.
After years of running everything from small 100W portable panels to full plug-in solar systems, I’ve learned that the truth lives in the details. Your savings depend on three things: the size of your array, how many peak sunlight hours your location gets, and what you pay for electricity.
Take Utah as an example. A 1,200W plug-in system — the legal maximum for residential microinverter setups there — with about 6 peak sunlight hours per day and accounting for 23% efficiency losses, generates roughly 5.5 kWh daily. At $0.14 per kWh, that’s about 77 cents a day. Not life-changing, but it adds up.
Then there are the safety myths. Solar panels can cause burns, electric shock, or worse. They generate power whenever there’s light, which means they can’t simply be “turned off” during a grid outage without a battery. Plug-in solar without battery backup won’t keep your lights on during a blackout — that’s just how the physics works.
Some panels work fine in cloudy weather, just at reduced efficiency. Others myths — like solar roofs always damaging your property value — don’t hold up against actual data.
The bottom line: solar can make sense, but only if you go in with realistic expectations and understand the constraints of your specific situation.
