China has reclaimed the crown for world’s fastest supercomputer, pushing the US-built El Capitan out of the top spot on the TOP500 ranking for the first time since 2018.
The machine is called LineShine, and it runs at the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen. That’s notable for a couple of reasons. First, it achieved this despite strict US export controls on high-powered computing components. Second — and this is the part that surprises people — LineShine doesn’t use any GPUs at all. Modern supercomputers almost always rely on GPU acceleration, so going without them and still hitting number one is unexpected.
The US still dominates the list overall, holding three of the top five spots. But China’s return to the top is as much a political statement as a technical achievement. The Trump administration has been tightening restrictions on what computing hardware can be sold to China, and LineShine is Beijing’s answer.
It also raises questions about how China built this thing without access to the latest GPUs. Either they stockpiled components before restrictions kicked in, found alternative suppliers, or developed competitive domestic chips. Each possibility tells a different story about where the semiconductor race stands right now.
